Le Grand Moulin

Le Grand Moulin: yesterday and today

A water mill already existed in the 17th century (Cassini map 1750 under Louis XV), and the construction of the current building on the same site dates back to the reign of Napoleon Ist. It was a wheat mill powered solely by the waterwheel. We can date the installation of the wheel to between 1820 and 1830. This type of wheel became widespread in the early 19th century, and was called the “English wheel” because steel was imported from England at the time.

The mill ran day and night without interruption. There were ten millers, working in three shifts under the supervision of a foreman who lived on site.

The large mill ceased operations in 1972. In 2005, the mill came into the ownership of a new family, who restored the building and transformed it into a place of hospitality, opening guest rooms and a holiday cottage.
